I’ve been out on the skinny skis loving every K the past two days. It’s been a couple years, but it all came back quickly and I’ve already got 70+ km. The legs and body are feeling good; it’s such a dichotomy between riding in Tucson amongst busy streets and skiing through serene forests. I really love skiing and the fresh corduroy is the equivalent of a vacant road or winding singletrack. I can’t get enough!

Aside from the cyclocross racing/riding as of late, I haven’t done a whole lot of training on the road. It seems that the quality intensity did the trick as much of the fitness seems to be sticking around alright. Saturday was my first shootout ride since March and I felt pretty good out there. We had some nice rotations going that kept everybody honest and narrowed the front group down to eleven guys. Tim and Sayers each put in some hard digs, while I saved mine for the last pitches of the climb when I could put it to best use, ‘winning’ the group ride in the process. The shootout makes for about 45 minutes of race quality intensity built within the three hour loop. Sunday I followed it up with an out and back group ride to Mammoth. We started with twelve and ended with six in the group as half opted for a more modest pace on the return. This ride makes for 4700ft of climbing and 98 miles. We did it under five hours with a lot of tempo pace. All in all, a good weekend of training on the roads here in Tucson.
Thursday night I’ll be headed home to Wisconsin for Christmas break and I’m hoping to put some K’s into the skis – its been a couple years… Congrats to everyone who tore up CX Nats! Marko, Tristan, and Sarah all put on some great performances. Over and out, -TJ

pictures to come soon, hopefully…

Yesterday’s efforts were well put as I was able to score the W at the Arizona State CX Championship race. Here’s how the day played out.

Race day started off right with some video coverage of the ’98 Cyclocross Worlds along with buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup. By 8:45 Chloe and I were off to Gilbert (Phoenix) with super-fan Brian Meyer along for the day’s excitement. With weather in the 45-55 degree range, the overcast skies with on and then off rain showers completed the list of cyclocross prerequisites. It was going to be a good day on the bike. We arrived at Freestone Park with about an hour fifteen until Chloe’s start so I helped her get things going so she could warm up with plenty of time to toe the start line and get the pre-race instructions. We set her bike up right with some Maxxis Raze tires covering her Mavic SpeedCity 700c rims fitted to her Orbea Alma. A pseudo cyclocross bike had been created. With the strongest legs she crossed the line first to take the victory.

By now I had checked out the rain soaked course. There were some climbs that were really saturated and quite boggy. The run up was tough and the flat open section was broken up with a triple barrier section before entering the tightest part of the course – the switchback descent that dumped out just 50 yards from the line. It looked to be a tough course, but not so tough that the race would quickly splinter. I couldn’t have been more right.

The pace from the start was hot as we all sought the front end of the race. Ryan jumped the barrier and rode the run-up brushing past me. By the end of lap one there were probably nine or ten riders in the lead group and it didn’t get much smaller anytime soon. Kyle put in some hard digs, Scott would do the same and we were always chasing Ryan as he continued to jump the barrier and ride the run up. Eventually the pace took its toll and the race was down to six riders – myself, Ryan, JR, Scott, Kyle, and Cam. With six laps to go I came out of switchbacks with a bit of a gap so I put in a hard effort with hopes to really whittle down the front end of the race. I was feeling good and wanted to make the tactics less nervous in the second half of race. The move worked and it was only Scott and JR who were able to respond, with Ryan dangling just off the back. I would lead, but I didn’t want the two Schampa teammates to have any extra chance to recover. With Ryan so close I wanted to keep it at three riders instead of the four. I put in hard efforts where the course was most challenging and did less work where it was somewhat easier, but yet I did most of the pace making since they had the numbers advantage and were content to follow. The final three laps went on like this and I new that any of us could win on the day. On the final lap I made certain to exit the triple barriers first and really accelerate quickly back onto the bike. This let me sit up just a bit as they chased before I punched it again going into the corners. Once I entered the switchbacks first it was a done deal and I did all I could to keep the tires underneath me before dashing to the line. JR came in second and Scott third, both within five seconds. It took a full effort to win and it came down right down to the end. It was surely the most action packed and enjoyable cross race of the year. I really had a blast out there.

It was a perfect way to cap off the cyclocross season and what turned out to be an enjoyable fall/winter diversion. Maybe in ’08 I’ll travel to some of the bigger events, but if not, I’ll know that the AZCross series will keep me plenty entertained.

I’d like to thank BMC for the bike and incentive to commit to the cyclocross scene, Arizona Cyclist for helping me build up the bike just right and Jeremy and his crew for promoting such a great series and Championship event. Thanks to Brian for the feeds and camera work. And, also a thanks goes out to whoever stashed that dollar bill on top of the run up barrier for me with two laps to go. Keeping it Real,

-TJ

After Saturday’s heavy rain showers the skies cleared and we had fair conditions to contest the Tucson CX race on Sunday. It was a tight course requiring lots of accelerating. Not far after the start Kyle, Jake, and I were able to get a gap. I tried to keep the pace high so that RideClean team tactics wouldn’t conspire. About four or five laps into the race Jake attacked at the top of the run up so I chased his wheel as quickly as possible. I was able to gap Kyle in the process and when Jake eased up, I simply kept the hammer down. Kyle followed about 10 seconds behind me for the next five laps but finally the margin became more comfortable and I was able to put it on cruise control to the finish. Somewhere along the way Jake managed to flat so he out of any option to pursue…

I’ve started working full time at our CTS Tucson office and so far things have gone smoothly. It ought to be a great opportunity to develop my coaching skill and experience while taking on a bit more responsibly. Of course I’ll continue to train and race, I’ll just have to be a bit more creative as to how I fit that into the schedule. I’m excited for all that is to come as I transition into the new role.

State CX is on Sunday and so far the have been four different winners of the four AZ Cross events thus far. It ought to make for a good showdown!  -TJ

I’ll let the photo’s tell the story for Saturday’s AZCross race in Phoenix. It’s one to remember for sure!

We assembled to the start line under torrential downpours.

We rode across this lake two weeks ago. It wasn’t 15 feet deep that day, rather it was dusty and dry.

Kyle took the win in what could be the most epic AZ CX race to date. Props!

After the race Kyle said I did a really good job of hitting the cement edge that sliced my rear tire on lap two… Luckily Mel helped me swap out the wheel in the pit and I chased for the remainder of the day, finishing 6th. The course was slick, boggy, or under water depending on the area of the park we happened to be racing through.

A couple of rainbows sent us back to Tucson. A huge thanks to super-fan Brian Meyer for taking the pics, ringing the cowbell, and running all across the course in the downpour. Thanks to BMC for getting me to the start line with the bike. -TJ

It’s been raining for 2.5 days here in Arizona and I’m about 45 minutes away from heading to Phoenix for a race this afternoon. Tomorrow Tucson CX will make it a double header weekend and there’s a good chance that both days could be full on mud races! What are the chances of that?! Stop back for the muddy cross weekend report.

Off to the races, TJ
